Jack Nicklaus: The Golden Bear — The Greatest Champion in Golf History
Jack Nicklaus (born January 21, 1940, in Columbus, Ohio) is widely regarded as the greatest professional golfer of all time. Nicknamed "The Golden Bear," Nicklaus won a record 18 major championships over a career spanning three decades — including 6 Masters titles, 5 PGA Championships, 4 U.S. Opens, and 3 Open Championships. His first major came at the 1962 U.S. Open, and remarkably, his last arrived at the 1986 Masters, when he won at age 46 in one of sport's most iconic moments.
Beyond his unmatched playing record, Nicklaus accumulated 73 PGA Tour victories and represented the United States in six Ryder Cups. He turned his passion for the sport into a second career as one of the world's most respected golf course designers, with over 300 courses bearing his name across the globe. Since 2004, Jack and his wife Barbara have raised over $100 million for children's health care through the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation, which supports Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami, Florida.
The Watch: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona — and a Legacy with Rolex
Jack Nicklaus has one of the most storied relationships with Rolex in the history of sport. His connection to the brand dates back to November 1966, when he attended a Rolex cocktail event at the Canada Cup (now the World Cup) in Tokyo alongside fellow golf legends Arnold Palmer and Gary Player. Rolex offered him a watch of his choice. Player, already a Rolex ambassador, pointed to a gleaming yellow gold model and advised Nicklaus to take it. Nicklaus did — and it became the first watch he ever owned.
That watch — a Rolex Day-Date Reference 1803 in 18-karat yellow gold with a rare champagne "pie-pan" dial — barely left Nicklaus's wrist for over 50 years. It was present on his wrist when he hoisted trophies for 12 of his 18 major championships. In 2019, Nicklaus auctioned the watch at Phillips in New York, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the Nicklaus Children's Health Care Foundation. It sold for a record-breaking $1.22 million — more than 120 times the retail value of a comparable model without its legendary provenance.
Nicklaus has also been seen wearing the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona — the watch featured in this article — one of Rolex's most iconic and coveted models, combining precision chronograph function with bold sporting elegance.

For a man whose career was defined by precision, composure under pressure, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence, the Daytona is a fitting companion on the wrist of The Golden Bear.
