WATCHES BY THE COUNTRY
The Watchmakers of the Czech Republic
From Nové Město nad Metují to Prague’s independent scene, Czech watchmaking is a small world with a surprisingly deep memory.

Czech watchmaking is anchored by Prim, the historic wristwatch name born from the postwar Czechoslovak watch project in 1949. That achievement put Czechoslovakia among a small group of countries capable of domestic wristwatch production, and the story still runs through Nové Město nad Metují, a town whose name matters to Czech horology the way certain valleys matter to Switzerland. Today, the country’s scene is compact but lively: part industrial inheritance, part design culture, part modern independent energy, with Prague helping to gather the new wave through events like Micro Praha.
The historic house
Prim was founded in 1949 and remains the essential Czech wristwatch marque. Associated with ELTON hodinářská in Nové Město nad Metují, Prim carries the country’s postwar watchmaking legacy into the present, producing PRIM watches in the Czech Republic and preserving a national horological identity that might otherwise have become a footnote.
The modern independent
Robot was founded in 2018 by Josef Zajíček and is also based in Nové Město nad Metují. The brand makes small-run mechanical watches assembled in the Czech Republic using Swiss movements, and it matters because it shows Czech watchmaking as a living practice rather than a museum piece.
Robot’s role is different from Prim’s, but the two names sit in useful tension. Prim represents continuity, a link to the era when Czech watch production was a national industrial ambition. Robot represents the current independent mood, where limited production, local assembly, and a sharper design voice can build a watch culture outside the usual Swiss orbit.
That contrast is the Czech Republic’s appeal for collectors. It is not a crowded landscape of dozens of historic maisons, and it does not need to be. Its watchmaking story is concentrated, legible, and unusually place specific: a postwar technical project, a surviving national brand, a town that still appears on the map, and a younger independent scene finding its audience in Prague and beyond.
