Founded in 2021 by Seattle-based architect Matthew Zinski, Typsim is a microbrand that marries architectural precision with the art of watchmaking. Zinski’s architectural background informs his approach, treating each watch as a meticulously designed object where every detail, from materials to proportions, must serve a purpose—much like in architecture.

Typsim distinguishes itself through its commitment to period-correct construction. Instead of using modern shortcuts to mimic the warmth of mid-century watches, Typsim opts for genuine materials like brass dial plates, acrylic crystals, and friction-fit aluminum bezels. These choices are integral to the authentic look and feel of vintage timepieces, despite the challenges they present.

Two standout features elevate Typsim’s offerings. First, the brand collaborated with RC Tritec to develop a unique lume compound that ages to a warm vintage patina over time, allowing the watch to develop character naturally. Second, Typsim made history as the first American brand to achieve chronometer certification at the Besancon Observatory in France. This clever workaround bypasses the Swiss-only certification of COSC, showcasing Typsim’s innovative spirit.

The flagship model, the 200M-C, is a 39mm stainless steel dive watch powered by a Sellita SW300-1 automatic movement. Its gilt dial with black galvanic coating exudes a high-contrast, warm aesthetic that complements its brass and acrylic components. The domed acrylic crystal enhances its vintage optical character, while its 200-meter water resistance ensures it is a capable diver.

The 200M-C also boasts the Besancon Observatory chronometer certification, combining vintage aesthetics with certified precision—a rare feat for a young independent brand.
