A Monumental Dialogue with Wood profiles Aspen Golann, a New Hampshire furniture maker and one of three artisans in the 18-month residency The Metropolitan Museum of Art runs with Vacheron Constantin. The programme ran from May 2025 to this month, with the finished works announced on September 15.
Golann’s piece is Vessel, a hollow wooden form around five feet tall, built from riven, steam-bent staves the way a cooper builds a barrel, then carved in bas-relief with stems, leaves, rabbits and deer. The motifs come from 17th-century American blanket chests in The Met’s collection and the crewel embroidery that once lined them. It was shown beneath the Temple of Dendur.
For Vacheron, this is métiers d’art storytelling by proxy: an argument that hand skill is the brand, whether the material is wood or gold. It is a quieter and more persuasive pitch than another ambassador on a red carpet.
